These days we are constantly encouraged to be obsessed with 'our self', to cultivate, express and indulge our own opinions, desires, wounds and importance. Every where we turn we are being moulded by the profit motive of corporate commerce into 'who' we should be, and being driven further away from really knowing ourselves. This happens in the world of yoga as much as anywhere else, where we are told what to wear, eat, believe and do (although not always openly), no less than we have been by other self appointed authorities, religious and secular.

However if Yoga is taken as something broader than knowledge and deeper than morality we can reconnect to our deeper, authentic self. This is not so difficult to do, as we are designed to learn, not only in thought but also in action. How we breathe, how we move, how we act on the mat conditions our actions movements and breath in daily life. To live from our authentic self our practice needs to follow the subtle, and release us from obsession with the obvious and intense, so that body and mind can become free from imposed ideas.

To me the Dynamic Yoga Training method is a complete expression of this possibility, that takes us on a step by step journey from the obvious to the subtle, not only in the body but also in the mind. By finding out more fully who and what we are, we have the possibility of letting go of who we are supposed to be and the contradictions and conflicts that we live from. Resisting the tide of conformity may not be easy, but we have the support of each other, and all those who embrace the significance of sensitivity, honesty, openness, intimacy and generosity. We can best do this by dedicating our practice (which is what seasons our life) to what we can give, rather than what we can get.
